BookMacster overview

BookMacster is a bookmarks manager for your Mac which plays nicely with iCloud Safari syncing, Firefox Sync, Sign In to Chrome, and Opera Sync. (Ours are the only non-Apple apps which can modify Safari bookmarks without corrupting iCloud data.) It can be used in one of three ways, or all three:

Manage Browser Bookmarks. Add alphabetizing and tagging. Verify, fix dupes, consolidate.
Cross-Browser Syncing. Sync bookmarks of Firefox, Chrome, Opera and more among all your devices.
Directly. Keep your bookmarks in one central store, accessible within web browsers.

What's new in version 3.3.9

Note: We have been testing in macOS 27 Golden Gate and have thus far not found any issues which are specific to macOS 27.

No longer works in macOS 11. Now requires macOS 12 or later.
We’ve added support for so many web browsers this year that the Export Exclusions list in the Inspector Window needed a scroller to show all of them. That scroller is now in place.
Now pre-encodes apostrophe (') characters in URLs when exporting to Chrome-ish browsers. This eliminates churn for users who have such bookmarks. The churn started recently due to a change in these browsers.
When a Verify operation encounters a site managed by Cloudflare which returns a 403 “Not authorized” error due to our being actually a bot and do not responding to its “Verify you are human” challenge, now categorizes this bookmark as good instead of as broken.
In the Inspector window, bottom collapsible URLs area, repositioned some graphics which have been misplaced in recent versions due to changes in Apple’s build tools.

DO NOT install this on 12.5. Sync didn't work for any of my browsers so I went back to 2.12.4. The database of all my bookmarks had been upgraded to V3 and was unusable. I had TimeMachine backup, but I still had to reinstall all the sync and button plugins to all my browsers to sync again with the older version. I wasted an hour backporting. I didn't try running this on 12.6, but I'm guessing that it does. The app should check and say so if the version isn't compatible. Over the years, I've had issues with BookMacster but the developer has always been willing to work with me and it MANY moving parts to resolve the issues. I feel I'd be pestering him unnecessarily to whine that V3 doesn't sync bookmarks on 12.5.1. I'll wait until I upgrade to 12.6 and V3.0 has had some time to mature before I upgrade. As I said, lots of moving parts that can have problems...

This keeps my bookmarks synced, as advertised. If you spend a little time setting up BookMacster, it just works. I did have a problem at one point. I contacted the developer and he was responsive and kept with me until the problem was resolved.

This app is very difficult to work with. The instructions do not match the actions well. I have used this in the past and still find the same problems in the current version. All I need is an app that will alphabetize bookmarks and sync to several browsers. Alphabetization works well but syncing always gives error messages and is quite annoying. Way too many preference settings and way too many screens to work in. PLEASE simplify!
